Magic The Gathering Mana Color

By Philip Wong

After you have determined what method you are going to employ to defeat your opponents, it is time for you to determine your favorite Mana Color. Long time ago the abilities you can find in each Mana Color are exclusive, meaning you cannot cast spells of red Mana if you only have black Mana. But now there are some Sorcery, Enchantment or other spells which are shared by different Mana Colors. But it usually cost you more to cast spells that originally belong to another Mana Color and also more limitations and requirements are imposed.

Magic cards are separated by 5 different colors: White, Black, Green, Red and Blue. Cards of the same color have inherent empowering effects on each other. One ability would make the other stronger. On the other hand, cards with different colors would impose limitations on each other when used together.

Due to the inherent effects of same color cards, some may think that a deck must be build with cards of one color only. But in fact, the game is designed in such an intelligent way that multi-color deck can also very powerful. Each color has its own style of attack. A single color deck may be more predictable and this decreases its chance of winning. Also, a single color deck can only use abilities of its own and miss out the strengths of other colors.

Thanks to the new expansion sets, new cards are introduced to bring in multicolor game play. Some cards allow you to access abilities of different colors by paying more mana cost. This would make the power of different colors more even and introduce more possibilities into the game.

Of course, if you use a deck of multi-color of Mana, you may be able to use strengths of different Mana color. But at the same time you greatly increase your own chance of making a Bad Draw. For example, you may have an entire hand of Red cards but not even one Red land card. And you will be sitting there eating fire balls.

In conclusion, using multi-color deck may be a wise way to play, but you have to have a lot of experience and a deep understanding of the different cards in order to play it well. You also have to buy a lot of multi-color cards which are usually more expensive. Like the famous card City of Brass, it gives 1 mana of color of your choice when you tap it, plus it will deal 1 damage to your opponent. This card alone costs around $4.5. Bear in mind you will have to get a bunch of these. So my recommendation is that you first familiarize yourself with single color or 2 color decks first, when you got the experiences and skills to play really diverse deck, you can go ahead. Wish you become a strong planeswalker. - 31879
